Well, sure. If the only way to get “air time” is to resort to hystrionics, that’s just what we should expect to see.
Certainly crazy will always get attention because it is, well, crazy. But I disagree that it is the only way to advance an idea. Mainstream vegetarianism (or simply less meat) is getting a lot of press from both the heath contingent and the global warming contingent. Both issues are much more relevant to most people, and therefore more likely to advance the ideas.
