Weed May Be the Next Penicillin

The active ingrediant in marijuana (the one that makes you high), has been shown in studies to be a powerful antibiotic–one that could be effective against illnesses where current drugs do not work.

Fortunately, (or unfortunately) there are unpsycoactive plants in the same family that may have similar medical uses.  Like all medical treatments, this will require much more testing and development, but it does throw another log onto the “why the hell is this so demonized by the DEA?” fire.

Drug War Still Doesn’t Work

$4 Billion spent on the drug war by the US government and still farmers plant coca in the Andes because they have to in order to make enough money to buy food.

It’s always about the economics.

Pot For the Economy

Maybe he’s on to something.

A Texas man was arrested for growing pot.  He said he started growing because the stuff began to get to expensive to buy.  Since, stereotypically, marijuana comes from Mexico and Canada, he’s certainly right about the falling dollar making foreign goods more expensive.  Maybe this is a good way to help cut down on the current-account deficit?

It also says that he had 70 plants worth around $100,000, so I don’t know if I believe him implying it was for personal use.  But you can’t fault him for trying.

Interestingly, news organizations in the northern US, where Canadian pot crosses the border, have been finding the same thing.

Serious Commentary:  Since the most important thing people seem to care about when doing drugs (weed here) is the cost, how about we legalize it and then tax the shit out of it like cigarettes and alcohol?  That way we can make some money off it instead of spend like crazy on a drug war that doesn’t work?

Better to be Stoned than Drunk on the Plane, Group Says

SAFER, the Denver based pot advocacy group, issued a well publicized press release calling for pot smoking lounges in airports, saying that it is safer than allowing innebriated customers to cause problems on the airplane.

As air travel gets worse, people are getting drunker, which is starting to cause more problems.  And since it is impossible to imagine a stoned person starting a fight, it actually seems like quite a reasonable solution.  Only one problem, says the FAA, as far as they know, it is still illegal.

11 Joints a Day May Increase Your Risk of a Heart Attack

Researchers studied heavy pot users and found that they had a higher concentration of a certain protein, which is associated with a higher concentration of a certain kind of fat, which is associated with hardening of the arteries, which is associated with a higher risk of a heart attack. The subjects in the study smoked between 78 and 350 joints per week, or 11-50 a day.

Things confirmed to increase your risk of heart attack:

  • Being a man
  • Being old
  • Being a post-menopausal woman
  • Being fat
  • Being stressed and angry
  • Smoking Tobacco
  • Drinking excessive alcohol
  • Using Vioxx
  • Diabetes
  • Being Black, Mexican, or Native American
  • Not exercising
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • (note none of these things are illegal)

Eighty years of trying to demonize marijuana and this is what they come up with? It sure is a good thing they put all those low-level weed users in jail with mandatory sentences.
